Solve paired blanks efficiently by translating the conditions and plugging from the answer grid.

Structure

Two-Part Analysis gives two linked targets.

A choice can work for one blank and fail the other, so both conditions must be satisfied together.

Framework

Use a compact four-step process.

  • Translate the prompt into two equations or logical conditions.
  • Inspect the options available for each blank.
  • Start with the blank that has fewer plausible values.
  • Plug systematically and verify both blanks.

Efficiency

Do not automatically solve the full algebraic system.

If the grid offers a small set of candidate values, plugging them can be faster and less error-prone.

Unit trap

Keep units attached to each blank.

One side may ask for a rate while the other asks for a total, percentage, or decision. Similar-looking numbers can represent different quantities.

Choose between algebra and plugging.

Algebra

Useful when the equations simplify immediately.

Plugging

Useful when the options grid sharply limits candidates.

Elimination

Eliminate pairs that violate either condition.

You do not need a candidate to fail both blanks. One contradiction is enough to discard it.

Mini application

Try this: x + y = 12 and x - y = 4. Candidate x values are 6, 8, 10; candidate y values are 2, 4, 6.

Which pair satisfies both?

Solution

x = 8 and y = 4.

They sum to 12 and differ by 4.

Remember this

Treat the grid as information, not decoration.

Use the candidate values to reduce work, then verify both blanks before committing.
